Free Spyware remover? Virus protection for free?

My computer hasn't been scanned in ages and it needs a good cleaning. I am looking for a free spyware remover program that works really good and is easy to use. I used to have Ad-Aware but I don't remember which version is the best version? Also, anything for free I could download to scan and delete viruses. All you have to do is register once (and quickly renew via their website), confirm through your email, and you can use all the functions without having to pay a cent. It's great at stopping trojans/worms/other harmful content from attacking your computer. You might also like to use Spybot - Search & Destroy as well as Avast. It will probably cover most things that Avast might miss. With Spybot installed, you won't need Ad-Aware.
